Black Reflectance Paintings (2012- 2015)

This series originally came to being from my interest in closing our eyes and still seeing. Neurological signals abound, the eyes see from a black space. For this series I invented a way of manipulating house paint to form a highly reflective surface. These paintings encourage viewers to look within the black space to ultimately see reflections from surrounding environments. I refer to this body of work as Other Side of Black and off Using my paintings as a Claude Glass (An 18th century obsidian looking-glass that helped painters simplify colors, shapes and tones) I make videos and photographs from the surface of the paintings by focusing a camera on dynamic and colorful reflections. Most recently, I reflect objects into my paintings until the light changes or until I paint the reflection away.  Some paintings I choose to abstract the reflection creating an entirely new vision.
