About

Studio LZ creates meaningful art by embracing simplicity as a tool to engage new ideas. Oscillating between material experimentation and interactive public art - Studio LZ believes creativity finds answers to questions we did not know we were asking. Studio LZ started in 2010 by Lauren Zoll as the lead artist and works collaboratively with other creatives, designers, and fabricators. Zoll’s studio is a certified women-owned business located in SoBro, Indianapolis Indiana. Lauren Zoll holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art with a focus in metalsmithing and architecture.

Career:

In 2012, in a solo exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Zoll exhibited paintings and videos in the Holeman Video gallery. The show was curated as a way to challenge the video program by showing Zoll’s videos which she created by filming her reflective paintings. Zoll’s process was profiled by PBS Digital Studios, The Art Assignment, and has recently been published into a book. In 2015, Zoll exhibited her reflective paintings in a MidWest painting survey at Elmhurst Museum of Art in Illinois. At that time Zoll received a Creative Renewal Award From the Arts Council of Indianapolis and began making ink from Black Beans. This award helped her integrate composting and growing her ink into her creative practice. 2015 brought about a public art commision, which is sixty feet long and remains Zoll’s most active piece as it connects viewers to the city of Indianapolis on a daily basis. This accessibility to art impacted Zoll’s practice. In 2017, Zoll was the recipient of the DeHaan Artist of Distinction Award, an award focusing on innovation - this award allowed Zoll to begin her exploration of Nanomaterials. Zoll’s 2019 two-person exhibition was the first exhibit for Indianapolis Contemporary. She exhibited her Black Bean Solar Panel, 40,000 Black Beans woven into a grid, fruit-dyed Nano enameled glass installations, and grew black beans during the exhibit. For 2021 Zoll opened Bending Light, three commissioned public art sculptures with an interactive publication. Zoll and the Indianapolis park community worked together to design the sculpture and shape an art educational experience for all people. Upcoming exhibits include a solo show of conceptual art and ceramics at the Indianapolis Art Center opening in August- October 2023. The end of the 2023 will deliver a commissioned public art piece by the Indiana Department of Development near the Cultural Trail.
